The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a pivotal exam for MBA aspirants in India, and its trends can provide insights into the changing landscape of management education. Comparing the data from CAT 2023 and CAT 2024 reveals interesting patterns in registration numbers, actual test-takers, and preparation strategies.
In CAT 2023, there were 330,000 registrations, while CAT 2024 might see a slight decline, with 300,000 candidates registering. Despite the drop in registration numbers, the proportion of candidates appearing for the exam remained consistent, with 288,000 taking the test in 2023 and 260,000 in 2024. This suggests that while fewer students registered, those who did were more committed to appearing for the exam.
A notable portion of the test-takers in both years, approximately half, were categorized as ‘Time Pass’ participants—candidates who registered but did not seriously prepare for the exam. This group numbered 144,000 in 2023 and 130,000 in 2024. These figures highlight a common trend of registration without earnest preparation, possibly driven by societal pressures or a casual approach to the examination.
On the other hand, the number of students who prepared earnestly using mock tests remained steady at 100,000 in both years. This consistency indicates a stable base of serious aspirants who engage in rigorous preparation. However, the challenges of maintaining motivation are evident, with 50,000 candidates reportedly losing motivation during their preparation in both 2023 and 2024.
Finally, the data on WAT-PI (Written Ability Test and Personal Interview) calls show that 25,000 candidates were shortlisted in both years. The number of candidates who made it to the main Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) also remained unchanged at 6,000. These figures reflect the competitive nature of the CAT and the consistent standards maintained by the IIMs.
In conclusion, while there might be a slight decrease in overall registrations for CAT 2024 compared to 2023, the patterns of serious preparation and final admissions remained largely stable. This analysis underscores the importance of commitment and motivation in achieving success in this highly competitive exam.
