To secure admission in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) via the Common Admission Test (CAT), candidates need to meet varying percentile cutoffs depending on the category of the IIM. The Baby IIMs, which include newer and smaller IIMs like IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur, and others, typically have a lower cutoff, starting at around the 70th percentile. These institutes provide good opportunities for students with moderate CAT scores.
For the New IIMs, which are relatively established but not as old as the original IIMs, the cutoff percentile is higher. Institutes like IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, and IIM Rohtak generally require candidates to achieve at least the 85th percentile. These institutions offer a balance of reputation and growing opportunities.
Securing admission into the well-regarded “M7” IIMs (often referred to as MILK for IIMs Mumbai, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode) necessitates a higher CAT percentile, typically above the 80th percentile. These IIMs are renowned for their robust academic curriculum and impressive placement records.
Finally, for the top-tier IIMs, known as the ABC IIMs (IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta), the competition is the toughest. Candidates generally need to score in the 90th percentile or higher to have a realistic chance of admission. These institutions are globally recognized for their excellence in management education and their rigorous selection process.

The eligibility criteria for the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) category for IIM admissions and the CAT exam are governed by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. To claim PwD reservation, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Minimum Disability Benchmark
A candidate must have a “Benchmark Disability,” which is legally defined as having not less than 40% of a specified disability.This percentage must be formally assessed and certified by a recognized government medical board or authority.
2. Recognized Disability Categories
The accepted categories of disabilities under the PwD reservation include:
- Visual Impairment:Blindness and low vision.
- Hearing Impairment: Deaf and hard of hearing.
- Locomotor Disability:Including cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, acid attack victims, and leprosy cured individuals.
- Mental & Cognitive Disabilities:Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disabilities, and mental illness.
- Multiple Disabilities: Any combination of the disabilities mentioned above.
3. Academic Qualifications
While general and NC-OBC candidates require a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their Bachelor’s degree to take the CAT exam, PwD candidates receive a 5% relaxation.Therefore, PwD candidates must score a minimum of 45% aggregate marks in their graduation.
4. Official Documentation
Applicants must possess a valid, official PwD certificate issued in the prescribed format by a competent medical authority.If a candidate fails to produce this valid certificate during the admission process, they will be treated as a general category candidate..
5. Exam Provisions and Seat Reservation
- Seat Reservation: 5% of all seats across IIMs are strictly reserved for PwD candidates on a horizontal basis.
- CAT Exam Concessions:During the CAT exam, PwD candidates are granted a time extension, receiving 53 minutes and 20 seconds per section instead of the standard 40 minutes. They are also eligible to use a scribe facility if needed.
To ultimately secure admission, candidates who meet these criteria must also achieve the minimum PwD category CAT cutoffs set by individual IIMs and clear the subsequent Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds.
