IIM Bangalore Selection And Eligiblity Criteria
Phase 1: Screening candidates on the basis of CAT minimum cut-offs
In this phase, IIM Bangalore screens candidates based on the institute’s minimum overall and sectional CAT 2024 cut-offs. About 85% of all test takers are filtered out at this stage. The table below captures IIM Bangalore’s CAT 2024 minimum cut-offs.

Please note that just because you have met all minimum cut-offs, you’re not guaranteed a WAT-PI shortlist. That will depend on your CAT performance as well as other selection criteria that will become relevant in the next phase.
Phase 2: PrePI Score – Shortlisting candidates for the WAT-PI process, based on weighted score
Here, candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their CAT 2023 score, 10th, 12th and graduation marks, and work experience. There are also additional points for gender diversity. The table below shows the IIM Bangalore’s admission criteria and their weights.
Pre-PI Score Components Table
Component | Maximum Points |

IIM Bangalore GD-PI Experience
Slot: 2:30PM (Had my college exam from 5 :p)
Venue: Online – MNIT Jaipur Hostel :p
Profile: B.Tech ECE Fresher. Acads 95/95/81.
P1, P2 50+, P3 30-35
Overall Experience: Was a wholesome interview covering every aspect and literally my best of the season. Liked the way they broke the ice and covered all things from there.
P3: So, as you’ve not graduated yet, how is it going? Are you in college, doing an intern or having exams? (Mine was a mix of all these)
Me: I’m currently in college hostel only. Interning at A and semester exams are ongoing.
So you gonna join A after your graduation?
Told him how it was an internship opportunity rather than a full time role.
Asked about placement scenario
I told about my college overall- how most of the students got placed and companies are visiting even now
He then asked about mine specifically – status & company
I told him the company I was placed (P)
Ok, so rather than joining P, you want to come here. Is it so? Why?
Told them I don’t want to limit myself to a single domain, want to explore the opportunities and how MBA can help me in that.
One follow-up ques on the same (told)
P2: Since, you don’t have work ex, I have to ask you ECE questions.
Around 10 min discussion on OSI model, 4G 5G, CSMA/cd, Fourier, fast-fourier
P3 asked me about a competition I mentioned in my SOP
I had my primary education in a Hindi Medium school by Vidya Bharti which is affiliated to RSS. So basically it was an annual inter school competition organised by Vidya Bharti. And in my 5th class, I went to finals of it. Told what was it about – Our history, values, culture, GK.
And then a ‘discussion’ went on importance of history
(And it made me forgot that it was an interview)
The exact question was:
Is it even important to read history when your work is not even a bit related to that say finance or IB
Some counter questions were there.
P2: My pastime
Me: geo-politics & cricket. Told him that I’m learning capitals of d/f countries.
P1,P2,P3 were simultaneously throwing question at this moment.
Asked 3 capitals instantly
Answered all. He commented that’s some serious learning :p
No. of teams in ipl now: 10
Name of new teams: Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants
Best team in ipl (after auction): Told Lucknow.
Told him how Lucknow got a balanced team with destructive openers(plus left-right combination)
and a pile of good all-rounders and then both spin & seam department.
Asked if I mean it or I just picked it from somewhere
Told them how I watched the auction live and analysed this myself.
P2 did a Bit of cross questioning on KL Rahul lol (if he’s really worthy)
Mentioned his consistency as how he’s among top3 run getters for 4 straight seasons. On if he’s really destructive: I mentioned in Punjab he was alone scoring runs and there was no support from other end that’s why his SR got affected but he’s can score quick runs we’ll see that. Also this year as a part of team with strong batting line-up like LSG, he’ll get that liberty to play aggressively.
But he didn’t stop :p
And asked me why I’m being a fan of him and ignoring the stats
After this, CAME THE BEST MOMENT
P1 said, “arey, use Karnataka ka sb kuch pasand hai” (he likes everything about Karnataka)
Brought an ear to ear smile on my face :p
So you play cricket in your college?
Me: Sir, I’m not a part of insitute’s team but yes I play in the hostel often even in the corridors. Also I played cricket regularly back in hometown before coming here.
P3: Where’s your hometown
Told it’s a village so he asked 1 ques about district.
It’s in Bharatpur district, so question was about Area of Keoladeo Ghana there.
Next 5-6 min on questions about my state
Governor, most illiterate districts, largest district, No. of Municipal Corporations, State symbols – animal, tree, bird, flower.
Rank engineering colleges in your state
P1 then asked me about my father’s business
Asked if I had any question
Me: No.
Around 25–30min interview but very structured and in flow.
Was definitely a ever-cherishing experience.

Sharing my recent interview experience at IIM Bangalore:
I reached the interview venue by 12:30 PM, where I encountered a vibrant mix of anticipation and eagerness among fellow candidates. The day was well-organized, with multiple interview panels operating simultaneously. After the initial formalities and document verification, I found myself allocated to Panel 3, Serial 4.
Post-lunch, around 2 PM, the interview commenced with a written assessment test (WAT) on the topic “Equal Access to Technology: What are the impediments? How to resolve them?” Following the written test, candidates were ushered in for the personal interview rounds.
Entering the interview room, I was greeted by two distinguished professors, each bringing their unique expertise to the conversation. Here’s a glimpse of the engaging dialogue that unfolded:
Professor 1 (P1): Tell me something about yourself.
Me: Gave the prepared answer, which seemed to satisfy P1. Meanwhile, P2 was going through my file.
P1: Tell what your organization does and your role in the same.
Me: Explained to him the entire flow of online transactions and the role of ACS in it for authentication. Followed it up with my day-to-day role as a software developer.
P1: Tell me about your tech stack and whether you work in front or back end
Me: Told him the tech stack that we use and I am full-stack dev, have to handle both the sides including deployment time and often.
Professor 2 (P2): So what is your mode of work? Hybrid or remote.
Me: Remote.
P2: So you have to stay in Bangalore to visit the office?
Me: Yes sir, I’ve been residing there since July 2022.
P2: Ok, so let me know why you choose Kolkata as your preferred interview center? Does Bangalore not provide you with these facilities?
Me: [Explained my rationale for choosing Kolkata over Bangalore, citing the convenience of home food during exam times.]
P2: Does your manager know about this?
Me: Yes sir, he only gave the referral.
P1: Do you have any stock holdings in your organization?
Me: Yes sir, I have Prosus stocks.
P1: What is Prosus now?
Me: Explained the nature of Prosus as the financial arm of Naspers, its listing on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, and its ownership of PayU/Wibmo, where I work.
P2: Okay, so I checked from Google something happening between PayU India and PayU GPO.
Me: Clarified the situation regarding the split.
P2: Which newspaper do you follow?
Me: The Economic Times.
P2: Tell me some recent news.
Me: Discussed recent developments in the stock market, business world, and upcoming elections.
P2: What is the current year-on-year GDP and inflation of India?
Me: Provided memorized answers.
P2: How is inflation measured?
Me: Explained CPI and its implications.
P2: Explain in detail and also let me know if inflation is negative what will happen?
Me: Provided a detailed explanation and speculated on the impact of negative inflation on purchasing power.
P2: Okay we are done. You may go now.
Me: Thank you sir. Have a nice day

Duration: 30-35 mins for Interview and 30 mins for WAT
Date & Time: 26th Feb 2020, 09:00 AM
Location: Vivanta by TAJ, Mumbai
Work Experience: 24-months Work Experience as on 31st July 2019 (31-months until the date of Interview) at L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Limited across India, Oman and Saudi Arabia Offshore.
Overall Experience: The most stressful of all the IIM Interviews for me. It was a roller coaster ride with highs and lows. After the interview I felt very exhausted and was questioning my chances. But clinged on to the positives. Do have a read to know what actually transpired across the four walls .
Written Ability Test (WAT): 10 mins for thinking and 20 mins to write
Question: Death penalty has been abolished in 70 % of the countries. While many other countries still continue. Comment.
The 10 mins thinking time was good enough to jot down the points. Wrote that countries who abolished have lower crime rates while its higher in countries which didn’t abolish. Backed it with examples like Nirbhaya case. Also told police should not resort to encounter like Hyderabad Veterinary Doctor case without Court’s order. Overall felt satisfied and WAT went well.
Panel: There were 3 members ( all Males ). One of the prof in Pyjamas was in his 40s and who grilled and interrupted most of the time. Lets call him G. Another prof in his 50s was mostly observing me closely and asked few questions. Lets call him O. Another guy in his 30s, was probably an alumni of IIM-B who also asked few questions and was a bit gentle among the three. Lets call him A. Myself will be K.
Fasten you belts for the myriad of emotions in my head denoted by ().
O comes out and call me in. After brief exchange of pleasantries.
G: So Karthikeyan when did you reach here.
K: Sir, I am based in Mumbai currently.
O: But you have mentioned Offshore.
K: Yes sir, I had been to offshore last year on May & June for 42 days at Saudi Arabia in Persian Gulf. After which I was allocated to another project which is in Design phase. Since design office is in Mumbai, I am currently in my base location Mumbai.
O: Okay
G: Okay Karthik, you have been brought up in Tambaram? ( He must have seen it in my mailing address )
K: Sir, recently only we moved to Tambaram.
G: Okay where have you been brought up during most of your schooling ?
K: At K.K.Nagar sir in Chennai.
G: You mean the posh areas near Ashok Nagar, right ?
K: Yes sir (I guessed he must be a Chennaite)
G: Have you ever tried to climb the Ashok Pillar ?
K: (Surprised, as the pillar is just a cylinder with Ashoka Chakra at the Top) No sir
G: Why ?
K: I didn’t feel the need to. He quickly moved on.
G: Which schools you studied in Chennai ?
K: From 9th to 12th it was Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, CBSE Medium ( Was a bit nervous )
G: Medium or Board ?
K: Sir, English Medium in CBSE board ( Felt a bit embarrassed for the initial mistake )
G: Okay, smiles
K: Sir, from 4th to 8th I studied in Velankani Matriculation School at Ashok Nagar.
G: He quickly moved on, Okay tell me 3 differences you observed between Mumbai and Chennai ?
K: ( Thought to keep it simple and honest )
- Mumbai is a bit fast paced, I can see that in terms of shopkeepers giving the change swiftly and aspirational people. He asked if in Chennai is it not like that, I told in Chennai also it’s there but not as pronounced as here in Mumbai.
- Green cover in Mumbai is very less when compared to Chennai
- Population density in Mumbai is more, wherever I go I see a sea of people, He asked if it’s good, I told No sir, it isn’t considering there are fires happening oftenly. He noted down some points on his evaluation sheet.
G: So you have worked in Project Management right, tell me what you do ?
K: Sir, it involves planning ( immediately was cut short )
G: Okay lets talk about planning, Tell me how do you plan the project ?
K: Sir, first the no of activities are listed out which are then mapped against time taken , was cut short
G: See, I already had interviewed a guy from L&T, I want a Technical answer, This is what you guys do right ! ( The tone was stern and I was paralyzed )
K: Was taken aback as my work didn’t directly involve planning, looked down on paper and thought for a moment, then A told me, its okay just ensure that you incorporate all the elements. I said, after listing down the activities, they are mapped against the number of days required for completion. But was cut short…
G: Work Breakdown structure ?
K: Oh yes sir, It is ( Me thinking in the back of my head, hopefully this doesn’t get worse )
G: Apart from No of days, What else are mapped ?
K: Sir, the manpower required.
G: In a firmer tone, Okay okay what else?
K: ( I felt he was pushing and scaring me too much ) Sir, materials are mapped
G: Okay okay, there is one more, You are missing that,Tell me what it is ?
K: Thought for a while, couldn’t recollect ( Cursing myself for mentioning planning, wanted the work exp part to get over with soon )
G: The people assigned to the task ?
K: Oh yes sir, A scope spilt matrix is prepared and the responsibilities are allocated.
G: Do projects go as per you have planned ?
K: No sir, sometimes not
G: Oh is your Planning isn’t good enough ?
K: Sir, not like that, there are Force majeure incidents like for example while working in Oman in December 2017, there were floods for 5 days and whole Yard was shut.
G: Oh yeah Force majeure events are there but tell me in General any other reasons or ways to improve Planning ?
K: ( Patting myself for mentioning Force Majeure ) Sir, in another case the client’s visit was delayed unexpectedly, hence it lead to delays.
G: How about Micro planning ?
K: Oh yes sir, the more we do planning at the micro level, it leads to better results. ( Meanwhile G was noting down some points )
G: Weren’t you involved in Planning ?
K: No sir, It was done by Project Controls Team, I was a part of the Project Management Team.
G: So tell me what is Project Management ?
K: Sir, Project Management is the Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closing of the whole project. One of the key jobs of a Project Engineer is to ensure the learnings of the previous project are implemented in the current project as a project engineer is involved through the entire cycle of the project. Wanted to continue but he cut short.
G: What else did you do ?
K: Sir, in my first project, I was the Project Engineer for HVAC ( Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning ) systems. I was involved in the Construction, Installation and Commissioning of these systems. Again cut short….
G: But before construction you will have to procure right ?
K: Yes sir, but I was not involved in procurement, I joined during the construction phase.
G: Oh okay, continue
K: Sir, during the construction phase I was involved in the Monitoring and Execution of HVAC systems for Tie-In Offshore platforms. I also handled independent responsibilities…( again cut short )
G: What software you used for Monitoring the project ?
K: I used Excel only sir.
G: He asked if I used some specific software
K: I said no
G: Okay lets talk about academics, You have done a specific course in Automobile Engineering, There is also a automobile lab course you have done. How old is the lab.
K: Sir, its actually very old. Its located behind the Mechanical department.
G: Looked at A and said it must be very Old. Both of them burst out laughing. At this moment I knew this is going to be a serious stress interview, I maintained my calm, occasionally smiled and defended myself.
K: Okay, can I ask you about Automobile Engineering ?
K: Sir, I have studied it 3 years back, but I am willing to give it a try.
G: Okay lets start with the basics. What is dy/dt
K: Sir, Its the rate of change of variable y w.r.t variable t.
G: Okay, tell me in Mechanical terms.
K: If y is distance its speed and if y is displacement its velocity. (Said it quickly)
G: ( He smiles and I too) Okay, okay,Leave scalars Lets talk about Vectors, What is d2y/dt2 ?
K: Sir its acceleration.
G: Do you know whats d3y/dt3 ?
K: (Eureka moment) Sir, I remember studying it in College, but I am not very sure, Can I take an educated guess?
G: (Smiling) Yeah yeah, Go on…
K: Sir its Jerk
G: Okay yes its Jerk, Now tell me which component in automobile is designed using Jerk ?
K: (I was totally taken aback, for I had prepared basic automobile Engineering and I considered answering Jerk itself a big thing, to top that now how do I figure out this design component) I asked to excuse myself to use the paper as it becomes easier to think looking at paper rather than the Interviewers.
G: Take your time, You are the last person, The 8th guy hasn’t come. So we have all day.
K: (I knew he was trying to stress me out, Had a smile in my face, O looked at me and smiled too) But I had zero clue for the answer, Didn’t know where to start, Scribbled something, then G gave a clue.
G: Think about the graph of d2y/dt2, draw it if you want.
K: Immediately assumed a function of y w.r.t t and drew the graph. Was actually swift because it was easy. Then A clarified its a clue and try to answer the Component. Now I was frozen and thought of the component with a Poker face. And G and A started to talk among themselves and laughed as well.
G: Do you know Hindi ?
K: Yes sir, I studied Hindi only till 10th grade.
A: What’s the Hindi term for Jerk ?
K: Sir its Jhatka. Then G started to give more clues for the Design question and I was becoming desperate inside.
G: Think about the Push and Pull movement of the Hand, He showed it !
K: I then said Clutch
G: No yaar with serious disappointment he said, its Suspension.
K: I then said, Oh yes sir. When vehicle hits the bump on the road, suspension has the Spring and Damper system which undergoes Jerk.
G: He then gave some more examples and even the application in Maruti Suzuki Car Model which is their USP to which A also agreed. Then he asked, “Do you plan to get a house from L&T”.
K: No sir, Its for people having 25+ years of service.
G: He laughed at it. Then A excused himself and he began explaining to G, about how once L&T converted their free spaces in Posh areas into Reality.
K: I too joined in the conversation, saying sir, even now there is a separate building being constructed to shift the office at Powai and convert Powai office space to reality.
A: He agreed and said, yes yes everything is turning into reality. Asked, Where is you office currently ?
K: Its in SEZ, Kensingtan, Hiranandani Powai.
A: Looking at G and commenting, “Ye oil and gas walo ke pass bahut paisa he, SEZ me office and all”.
Over to G:
G: Does your office seniors know about you attending Interviews?
K: Yes sir. My seniors also gave me recommendation letters.
G: Yes yes, okay
O took over:
O: You had mentioned in your SOP about watching documentaries and reading non-fiction books as your hobbies, Whats the latest one you had done ?
K: Sir, recently I watched a documentary on World Wars – 2.
O looking at G:
G: Is it the one in National Geographic ?
K: No sir its on History TV.
Over to O:
O: What are the latest books you have read ?
K: A brief History of Modern India by Bipin Chandra, A book on diet by Rujuweta Diwekar and Unplugged Meditation by Schwartz. Also, told how the meditation book greatly inspired me.
O: With a stern face, Leave Diet and Meditation books, Focus on A brief History of Modern India, Can you summarize the book in a single line.
K: Sir it starts with Mughal empire fading away, British came and conquered India through chicanery. Spoke slowly hence couldn’t complete it. (A little bit disappointed with myself)
Meanwhile G interrupted
G: Who was the last Mughal Emperor?
K: Bahadur Shah
G: Zaffar
K: Yes sir Bahadur Shah Zaffar. ( Thinking, Oh my God, He is an encyclopedia )
G: There was one Kingdom which the Mughals weren’t able to conquer despite several attempts, its not mentioned in any books as well. Do you know who it is?
K: (Thought of saying Marathas but it was well known) Said I am not sure, maybe I can take a valid guess, but they moved on.
Over to O:
O: Can you give 3 lessons to be implemented for Today’s India ?
K: Yes sir
- We got independence because we were united in the fight against British. But recently there have been fringe elements attacking the religious harmony which should stop. Wanted to continue but he asked to move to the next point
- Also, one of Mahatma Gandhi’s significant move was to include peasants in the movement and use mass movement. Similarly we must proceed for an inclusive society thus reducing the gap between the rich and poor.
- Couldn’t recollect any third point hence excused myself to think using the writing pad. Thought for few seconds and O said
O: Its okay, I just wanted to know how you think (He noted down some points)
Over to A:
A: How do you look yourself 5 years down the lane ?
K: Sir, I would like take up managerial roles in the areas of Operations and Project Management .
A: So if suppose an Investment banking firm make you an offer, wouldn’t you accept it ?
K: No sir, I wont accept it. I am a Mechanical Engineer with experience in operations and project management domain for Offshore Platforms. Hence, I would like to capitalize on my Domain expertise.
A: Lets assume the Indian government bans fossil fuels and Oil & Gas sector is not going good, What you will do?
K: (Immediately responded in firm voice) Sir, I have worked in EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) Projects for offshore oil & gas projects. There are offshore wind farms as well to work with. (Felt happy because I nailed the answer)
A&G together said: Oh its okay, its okay, Don’t get tensed. Meanwhile I sense O smiling at my response.
K: No sir, I am not tensed, I just wanted to justify myself.
G: Which was you hostel in your college?
K: (I sensed he must be an alumni from NIT Trichy) From 2nd to 4th year it was ZIRCON. First year (before I could finish he answered)
G: AGATE ?
K: Yes sir its AGATE, Sir, are you an alumni of NIT Trichy?
G: Yes, That’s why I asked about automobile lab, as during our days there wasn’t any. Who is the Mechanical dept HOD now ?
K: Sir, then it was Mr. Sudhakar
G: Oh he became a HOD, nice.
G: Do you have a Grilfriend ?
K: No sir
G: Yes with this academics its difficult right ?
K: ( Smiled ) Yes sir, Also I am from Mechanical Engineering.
G&A: Both burst out laughing loud, I also joined in. A even said, “That was a good one” (I felt good as I was able to use my wit to lighten the mood)
K: Went on to explain, my class had only 5 girls for 94 boys and my senior batch had 0 and junior batch had 1.
G: That’s at least better, In our case Mechanical, Metallurgy and Production including senior and junior batches had 0 girls.
K: (Sensing G’s earlier enthusiasm in automobile engineering) I said, Sir we also have a PSI racing club, they make cars, but before I could finish
G: Yes yes I know about what you guys do there. Earlier we had a guy from NIT Trichy who told me about the club.
G: Okay we are done with the Interview, Do you have any questions for us ?
K: Yes sir, considering teaching profession is not highly valued in India and IIM faculties are known for their excellent pedagogy. What made you choose teaching profession?
G: ( Smiled ) What to do yaar. You don’t have any choice. But sometime in life you decide to choose teaching with self interest. Any other questions?
K: (Thought for a while) Whats the purpose of giving Toffees or Cookies ?
G: Are yaar, This is just to make you feel nice. Nothing much to do. You must have received from other IIM Interviews as well right.
K: No sir, I didn’t get one from IIM A
G: ( Smiled ) So now I understand why you asked this question. Take one, take the other variety also, Its more sweeter. He then asked if I am a sweet person. (I guess he wasn’t done with grilling)
K: Took two Cookies. Said sometimes I am sweet sometimes sour.
G: Okay Thank you Karthik.
K: Thanked all and left. Phew
Its pretty long but trust me, this was what happened in the interview. There were moments of highs and lows but I stayed calm and held onto my nerve.

My Profile: Mechanical Engineering (CEG, Anna University) with 2yrs workex (Voltas), 10th – 96.8, 12th – 98.25, BE – 87.5. CAT %ile – 98.31(nc-obc). Got calls from all IIMs.
This was my fourth interview after SPJ, Lucknow and XLRI.
Interview:
They had my SOP with them. And IIM Bangalore gives a huge weightage to SOP in their PI round.
The female prof saw me waiting outside the hall at 12:30 pm during morning slot. I went a little early to the hall. My interview was in the afternoon slot and I was the seventh one to go. The time was around 4 pm.
Panel- Good evening! You should’ve been waiting for so long. Did you have your lunch?
Me- No mam. But I had some juice.
P- (they had some snacks on the table and offered me some)
Me- I told no thanks and we proceeded to the interview. They really made me feel very comfortable.
P- You’ve started your SOP with a quote. Tell me something about the person who wrote the quote.
The quote was – “Everyone you’ll ever meet knows something you don’t” by Bill Nye.
Me- I told about him. He was an American television show presenter known for his show – “Bill Nye The science guy”.
P- Did anyone advise you to start your SOP with a quote?
Me- Yes, sir. My seniors advised me to do so. Also, I feel that it’d be easier to get an overview about me with just a sentence.
P- Tell me about your job. You’re into sales, right. It must be an interesting job. How is your average day of work?
Me- Yes, sir. It is interesting and also thrilling because everyday you get to win or lose a project. Also, you get to meet different people from various fields.
P- You’ve been working for two years. You must have some sales targets and how are you achieving them?
Me- I told them that for the first year since I was working as a GET, I didn’t have actual targets but for the last six months I had targets and I managed to achieve them. Also explained them about my location and how I landed on the sales role.
P- How’s your salary? Is it fixed or variable? What about bonuses?
Me- Answered. Fixed salary but bonuses are given at the end of financial year depending on our target achievements.
P- Do you think for people working in sales, salary should be dependent only on their performance and not fixed?
Me- No, sir. Because there are few months where you can’t achieve your targets and few months where you’ll over achieve. So, it’s better to have a fixed salary every month and a bonus based on the performance calculated quarterly or half yearly.
P- What products do you handle? Which part of sales you’re in? Products or services? Which contribute more to the revenue?
Me- Commercial air conditioning products – VRF and ductables. I told them about the current market and how competitive it is now. So most projects are taken with lesser margins so it is services which contribute more to revenue.
P- What are the disadvantages of VRF?
Me- Answered.
P- Who are your customers?
Me- Primarily my dealers and channel partners. Also, consultants and architects are my customers because most of the projects come through them. In some cases, I’ll have to deal with the end customer directly.
P- What is your organisation structure?
Me- Explained them about my company’s structure and escalation matrix.
P- Consider a situation where there is a project for which you have quoted and another salesman has also quoted for it. How do you handle such a situation?
Me- This situation can be easily resolved because each salesman is allocated his own region and customers. If there is an overlap priority will be given to the one who’s handling that particular region. But, the problem arises when two dealers quote for a same project. Because, I can’t support one dealer and ignore another. I usually handle this by giving priority to the one who has been following up for the project for a longer time.
P- Do you think is it okay to over-promise a customer while making a sale? For example, a product has been launched recently and you have made a sale by committing to a delivery time. But you couldn’t deliver it on time due to some issues.
(I actually laughed after hearing this question because this exactly happened to me in my job few months back)
Me- I told them that in sales you should never over-promise because I’ve suffered enough once and lost a customer due to this. It is okay to commit to a longer delivery time and delivering them earlier rather than promising a quicker delivery date and not able to deliver on time.
P- So after MBA in which field/role do you want to work?
Me- I don’t have anything particular in my mind. I just want to learn and explore more opportunities. But I really liked working in sales so if to choose a particular field, it’d be marketing.
P- Thank you. Have a nice day
Me- Greeted them and left.
I was really surprised because there were no questions related to my academics or current affairs. It was just about my job and the statement of purpose.
Verdict- Converted.

1 Day before interview
I was staying with my elder brother in Greater Noida. I revised everything which I had been preparing from the last few months since I started getting calls for the interviews from various top B-schools. I was a little scared as this was my best call among others. My sister-in-law gave me confidence that you know everything and you are going to do well. Just be confident and calm and have a smiling face. She took a small mock interview of mine as she is an MBA in HR, it was less an interview and more an interaction so that I can feel relaxed. We all had dinner together and then I thought of going through my final year project again which I had published as a research paper in International Journal of Thermodynamics (IJoT). Then after going through some other stuff related to my life I went to sleep at 12 am and prebooked an OLA cab at 6:15am.
D-Day
I woke up at 4:30 am and then went through a little bit of Mechanical Engineering specially Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics as these were related to my final year project and were two of my best subjects. I got ready and had a quick breakfast and left for the interview at sharp 6:05 am. I was continuously reading through newspaper apps TOI and Indian Express and glancing through GDP and economy figures. Finally I reached there at 7:30 am and there were 2-3 students waiting there. I checked my name and saw that I had my interview on 2nd floor where I got to know that IIM A interview was also scheduled there but on the 1st floor. I waited at the Lobby with others and then we were finally told to proceed to the interview lobby area. I reached there and I saw there were close to 24 students waiting for the same interview. The admin guys came and told us to take our seats and come one by one for the document verification process. After completion of this process the interviewers arrived and split us in 3 panels with 8 students each. During the document verification process I didn’t talk to anyone as this was my usual way to avoid distraction and maintain my confidence. I was allotted Panel no. 2 and my serial number was 2 in the list. We were taken to the room where all 8 of us were told to sit in a round table type of sitting arrangement with mobile phones in silent mode and in your bags. We were given instructions regarding our WAT.
WAT TOPIC– Higher marks required in University entry is increasing cheating in exams. How it can be prevented? Is reform required in education sector?
10 minutes were allotted for rough work and 20 minutes for writing. Front page for writing and back page for rough work which won’t be evaluated. I created a basic outline in those 10 minutes that how I am going to start and finish. I wrote in 2 paragraphs with first one relating to ways of preventing cheating and second one relating to reforms in education sector. I wrote it nicely and completed it in 15 min and read again for any grammatical mistakes. After that we were told to collect it and submit that to him and leave the room. The Prof was one of the panelists.
Start of interview process
After a gap of 15 min one of the Prof came outside and called out the first guy in the list. He went inside at 9:45 am and there was an air of terror everywhere as he didn’t come out soon. Finally he came out at 10:10 am soaked in with sweat even though it was fully air conditioned and freezing like hell for people like me who can’t take on AC air for a long time. He gulped 3 glasses of water and some candidates started asking him how is the panel and what sort of questions they are asking. I didn’t bother to ask as I knew that they are not going to repeat and I wanted to keep it fresh and avoid losing my confidence level. I sensed that they are grilling by seeing the sweat on the forehead and anxiousness level of the last candidate. I maintained my calm and just thought of doing my best and after 5 min the same Prof came outside and called my name. I entered and they told me to keep that folder on the table kept there as we won’t require that. It was strange as it was the first interview where they didn’t check my folder which was full of achievements. I got a little low.
Panel members (I got to know it later after searching through the faculty list)
Right to Left
P1– Male- Anil B Suraj (Centre for Public Policy)
P2-Male- Alumni
P3– Male- D Krishna Sundar (Production and Operations Management)
P3 took our WAT and he was most serious and sarcastic one.
P2 started the interview with the first question which was expected by me.
P2: Why is Vedanta in news all the time? Tell me some recent instances when company was in the news.
Me: Recently Vedanta was in news for the Sterlite Copper incident which caused firing and deaths were reported. It was an unfortunate incident which could have been avoided. The second one is in the Lanjigarh Alumina refinery where protest is going on regarding extraction of aluminium ore bauxite from Niyamgiri Hills which is considered as sacred by the community residing over there. The third one is the violation of pollution norms at several of their units.
P2 talking to P1 and P3- Niyamgiri Hills is having the highest bauxite ore in Asia and if India starts mining then it is going to solve a lot of problems but they are not able to do it.
Me: Listening carefully to the discussion.
P2: Now answer the first part of the question.
Me: I think Vedanta is good at learning from its past mistakes and they have learned a lot from the Sterlite incident and they are improving their processes to bring down the violation of the environmental norms and I have seen that happening at the Balco. I think some reforms are required in the environmental sector too to help the firms that are facing such issues. One such is the instantaneous value that is taken into account and if we exceed that amount then we come under violators list. Just consider the case with HF norms which is 0.65mg/Nm3 and it is instantaneous value. When we compare that with other countries then they consider the same value but the average of the 24hr period. Any plant requires overhauling and we are no different. We need shutdown of our system to carry out critical operation and maintenance activities and at that time our values may go above the norm but when we take that value on a 24hr period then we are much below that level. They checked each other’s face.
P2: What is HF?
Me: It is Hydrogen Fluoride which is one the gas that is released during the electrolysis process of aluminium.
P1: You consider the case with Bangalore. It is an IT hub. Do you think any industry is polluting here?
Me: Yes, the datacenters owned by the IT giants requires a lot of power which is generated by the thermal power plant causing pollution in an indirect way.
P1: What is wrong with Indian industries? Why are they so much in news for pollution?
Me: The Indian industries uses a lot of power and the pollution by them are easily noticeable by the immediate community residing over there which is not the case with the datacenters.
P1: Which industry according to you is the best leaving your own company? Why?
Me: With a smiling face. I consider Tata Steel as the best industry in this category as they take a lot of care about the community where they establish the industry. Just take the case of Jamshedpur where they have developed the basic infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, etc. The community residing over there gives a very positive feedback about the company and that is very important for the sustenance of the industry in the long run.
P1: Which aspect you consider as the most important part for any industry?
Me: I consider the social part as the most important part of the industry.
P1: Why?
Me: I think if you have the support of the community where you are establishing the industry then more than 50% of your job is done. They are the backbone for any industry.
P1: How many CM’s have been in Jharkhand?
Me: Sir I am not aware of the exact number. Only 2 times we have the stable government which is the present government and the government before that since its formation. Most of the other governments have been short lived.
Now P3 comes into play. He was quiet for most of the time where he was reading something in his laptop and listening to my answers without having eye contact.
P3: Shrutesh, I see you have 96.8% and that is almost 100% in your graduation. You have published a research paper in international journal on heat exchangers. Can you name the authors?
Me: I published that research paper with my HOD Prof Thundil R and one of his research students John and two of my batch mates Akshay and Ujjwal.
P3: I will give you a case and I want you to explain that to me with equations. Design a frustum shape heat exchanger and compare the same with and without fins. Write all the governing equations and explain the same to me.
Me: (I was scared like shit bcoz I didn’t remember the equations) Sir I will try to explain in the best way I am capable of but I may not be able to write the equations.
P3: Why?
Me: It’s been a long time since graduation and I may not remember it.
P3: Shrutesh, You are a mechanical student? You should remember it. (in a serious tone) Explain. Use this pad and pen.
Me: I made both the diagrams, one with the fins and the one without it. I explained the position of fins and how it will impact the heat transfer and pressure drop. It was a neat diagram with proper symbols.
P3: Now write the equation for conduction, convection and boundary layer condition?
Me: This was something which I had told that I don’t remember earlier. But now all of sudden I don’t know how that came to my senses and I wrote the equation for conduction and convection perfectly with signs also explaining all the parameters.
P3: Now write boundary layer condition.
Me: I wrote the boundary layer condition but something was missing.
P3: Don’t you think this will be dimensionless?
Me: It suddenly struck my mind and then I put the integral sign along with the limits.
P3: Don’t u think it will be double integral?
Me: No sir it will be single integral.
P3: Are u sure?
Me: Yes sir
P3: Good. See u know everything. Now tell me you are technically so good then why u want to do an MBA? Go for MS or M.Tech.
Me: My long term goal is to get knowledge of business segment of the field in which I am working and going for MS or M.Tech won’t serve my purpose. So an MBA will help me in fulfilling my long term goals.
P3: That is your long term goal. You can even do an MBA after MS.
Me: I have already gained good amount of experience and now I want to explore the business side of the industry. I may be confined to the technical field and may miss on the business management side of the industry.
P3: What is the famous tribal dance of Jharkhand?
Me: It is a dance performed by the Santhali tribe. I am not able to remember the name.
P3: Shrutesh, Are u from Jharkhand? (in a sarcastic and serious way)
Me: Yes sir
P3: Then u should be remembering it.
Me: Sir, I just remember the tribe name. I am not able to remember it at this point of time.
P3: How many districts are there in Jharkhand?
Me: 24
P3: How inflation is related to economy?
Me: I explained him properly but he was not that convinced. We all had a healthy discussion for some time and then he left that question. He still showed that he was not convinced.
P3: Now are you able to remember that dance name?
Me: (All of a sudden I remembered the name of the dance. May be I have become relaxed. That’s why.) It is Santhal dance.
P2: Do u know who is Birsa Munda?
Me: Yes sir. He was the tribal freedom fighter from Jharkhand and played a role for the rights of tribal in Jharkhand against occupying their lands.
P3: Do u remember the period when he was active?
Me: I don’t remember the exact period. He was active near 1900. (This was correct as he was active from 1885 to 1900)
P3: Don’t u remember the exact period.
Me: No sir, I just remember that.
P3: What are your hobbies?
Me: I like playing badminton.
P3: Who is Men’s Badminton champion?
Me: Sir I don’t follow badminton that much and too Men’s. I just like playing it in my free time.
P3: Why we Men are not allowed to play badminton. (in a sarcastic way)
Me: No sir, it’s not like that. I just follow Women’s championship.
P3: Ok, what is your other hobby?
Me: I like reading editorials of newspaper.
P3: Which papers you read?
Me: I read TOI, The Indian Express column section.
P3: Which author you generally read?
Me: I generally look for content rather than author?
P3: Why?
Me: Everyone is biased in some way or other.
P3: Everyone likes an author?
Me: (I was avoiding name for long but now I was forced to answer knowing that they may grill me on this which I may not be able to answer) I first read the section and then I draw my conclusions so as to avoid the bias present in the article. This gives me a balanced view of the topic discussed and then I see the name of the author.
P3: Any name you remember?
Me: Shobhha De
P3: Ok (No further questions on that which made me relax)
P2: Give any instance from your life where you have displayed something?
Me: I participated with my team in NCQC,2019 for the first time under 5S category and got 11st best area in the plant. It was the first when a team has gone from FTP under 5S category.
P2: Any tangible or intangible benefits?
Me: It created awareness among other workers present in that area and increased participation. Safety was also improved. Less incidents of injury or near miss were reported.
P2: Are u preparing for UPSC? Have u ever thought of preparing for it?
Me: No sir I never prepared for UPSC and I never thought of preparing for it.
P3: Do you have any question for us?
Me: I have 2 questions to ask. First one how to maximize my MBA experience over there. Second one, I am interested in Supply chain management and are there any clubs or chapters related to that.
P3: For the first one, you have 24 hrs with u. You can utilize in any way u want. Some study and some participate in clubs. It’s up to u how u manage your time. For the second one, yes there are clubs related to supply chain management. You can join material handling club also as you are working in that area (in a sarcastic way). But first you have to come there. (All were laughing including me).
P2: We are done. All the best!
P1 & P3: All the best!
Me: Thank you sir.
Duration :It was close to 45 min. I got to know after coming outside when one of the girls told me what you were doing inside for that long. You have been for 45 min. (I was surprised that I have spent so much time inside.)
Calls: IIMB, IIML, NITIE, TISS ,IIFT, New IIM’s and Baby IIM’s, IIT Delhi
Attended: IIMB, IIML, NITIE, IIFT, New IIM’s, IIT Delhi
Converted: IIMB, IIML, NITIE, New IIMs and Baby IIM’s
Waiting for results: IIFT, IIT Delhi
Tips for future aspirants: Be calm and composed. Don’t bother too much. Have a smiling face all the time no matter how much the situation is tough. Don’t bluff if you don’t know because they know a lot and they search everything you say on the internet. You will be caught. Like in my case P1 and P2 were very friendly but P3 was constantly trying to put me in stress which I tried my best to avoid by having a smiling face. (Even though I was little under stress from inside). It’s all about attitude and the way you answer. They don’t look for candidates who can answer all the questions rather they check your way of answering and the right attitude to fit in there. You will be surprised in the interview that IIMB generally call only those people who have been achievers all their life in every field. So all are same before interview but you need to do things differently to get you selected for #The Place to B.
Edit2: Thank you so much for the love with your upvotes and views. I entered IIMB with Merit Scholarship of Rs 4lakhs (Top 30) and had a wonderful journey over there which completely transformed me. It’s been 3 years since the interview and I still remember everything. Finally I took one course with one of the panelist Prof. Anil B Suraj and even clicked a photo on my last day at IIMB. Also got some tips from him to balance career and health and not run for money which will eventually come to you.
