“Percentage” and “percentile” are terms often used in Exams and data analysis to describe different aspects of student’s Scores distribution and comparison. While they both relate to proportions and rankings within a dataset, they have distinct meanings and applications.
“Percentage” refers to a proportion of a whole expressed as a fraction of 100. It is a way to represent parts of a whole in terms of a percentage value. For example, if you have 30 red balls out of a total of 100 balls, the percentage of red balls would be 30%. Percentages are commonly used to describe proportions, rates, and ratios in various contexts, such as expressing discounts, interest rates, or success rates.
“Percentile,” on the other hand, relates to the relative ranking of a particular data point within a dataset. It is a statistical measure that indicates the percentage of data points that fall below or at a certain value. The concept of percentiles is particularly useful for understanding the distribution of data and identifying where a specific value stands in comparison to others. The median, for instance, is the 50th percentile, meaning 50% of the data points are below it.
